Ayurveda is the traditional healing science of India
with a legacy of more 3000 years. This age-old
holistic medicine emphasizes on prevention of
diseases rather than their cure. Ayurveda helps to
attain relaxed mind-body harmony, keeping pace with
the laws of NATURE. Ayurveda believes that man is an
epitome of the universe. It gives a graphic account
of how the living body is only a microcosm of the
macrocosm that is nature, and all elements that
exist in the nature are reflected in the living body
in its minutest form. This close interaction with
nature form the bases for the indigenous thought
process which is the foundation of this medical
system.
Today
when the word modern medicine has become synonymous
with the word side-effects, more people are moving
towards natural methods of treatment, having
discarded synthetic chemical drugs. Ayurveda among
the alternative medicines has won great acclaim, the
world over. Ayurveda envisages a totally different
lifestyles that encompasses healthy diet,
stress-free mind, and a relaxed mind-body harmony,
all in tune with the laws of nature. "Back to
nature" has become the watchword of health watchers
nowadays. Ayurveda literally means "knowledge about
life". The ancient saints of India (2000 - 3000 BC)
could perceive this divine "Wisdom of life".
According to Ayurveda human being is an inseparable
part of the NATURE. This life-science could see the
physiology of human body in three Humors (Tridosha-
Vata, Pitta and Kapha,) and human mind in another
set of three Humors (Sathwa-Rejo-Thama). The total
equilibrium of tri-doshas means POSITIVE HEALTH or
SOUND HEALTH. As it implies, DISEASE is imbalanced
state of doshas. So through Ayurvedic treatment, the
balancing act is performed. Ayurveda follows a
treatment method based on medicines prepared from
herbal plants. Ayurveda has a holistic approach and
it helps maintain the balance of the physiological
systems and plays a vital role in preventing
diseases and rejuvenating the entire systems of
body, mind and soul.
Our
ancient worshipful saints could again see that the
human body is made of five basic elements i.e.
earth, water, energy, air and space (called
Panchabhuta). These five elements constitute
protoplasm -the life. Among them water and air could
be found only in this planet of EARTH. Therefore,
LIFE could so far be traced only on earth. Again
this protoplasm is differentiated into seven TISSUES
(Dhatu-macroscopically). So finally according to
Ayurveda HEALTH means a complete state of happy -
relaxed mind & soul with balanced humors and
"tissues". This concept has been the bottom-line of
later deeper thoughts which has taken the modern
human wisdom to the extent of MOLECULAR BIOLOGY.
Ayurveda is very popular in Kerala, due to the easy
availability of Natural drugs and favorable climatic
conditions, with the excellent Tradition in
Ayurveda, Kerala is renowned as the `Cradle of
Ayurveda`.
